Looking for opinions from people who have experience with electric and gas smokers. How would you compare them?

Online research suggests that electrics are easier all the way around, but they cost about 3x what a gas smoker costs.

Phil, we use electric smokers at the Lodge. We find them to be easy & the heat is consistent.

It's the beginning of our signature CFA Smoked Redfish Dip.

I like the electric smokers also "plug and play", don't have to sit over it for hours, just walk by and occasionally throw a chunk of wood on it. Taste wise, unless you are a smokeaholic, prolly not much different.

Electric is easier... plus it would suck to run out of gas halfway thru...

even though Boo makes a great argument rolleyes.gif , I concur with electric. Consistent heat really is the key. Mine uses the a steel bowl that you put wood chips in. I fill it twice to do a pork roast. You buy whatever flavor chip you want(hickory, apple, mesquite etc) at home depot. Really is EZPZ

I have a BGE. it is one of the easiest cookers to use.

The only problem is the are $expensive$. But once you get one, you will never have to buy anything else.

BTW, there is a new BBQ store in the APK, he sells BGE and other cookers plus he has a nice variety of wood chips and chunks.

BGE is making gas or electric models now?

Seriously, I appreciate the input, but I am not interested in a BGE for a smoker.

Well, heat wise you don't have to tend an electric. BUT, it will run out of smoke and you'll want to be there to add chips during the early parts of the cooking.
