Went down in search of a Pacific Sail on fly. Took the whole family and met my father-in-law down there, so we had a pretty full house. We rented a place between Herradura and Tarcoles (the river with all the crocodiles). This was our first trip to Costa Rica.

Not knowing what to expect, I only booked one trip in advance, thinking I'd make a call and grab a panga based on weather once there. This was a mistake ... this time of year the weather and seas are going to be fine every day. Lesson learned.

Fishing was slow our first day out. The radio was quiet and many boats skunked out. We trolled in vain for hours before a fish came up in the spread. The captain took the boat out of gear and he and the mate hauled in the teasers, I made a cast, popped the fly 3 times, then fish on...

Got a few good jumps (2 or 3 on video!) and after about 15 minutes brought this guy aboard for a photo.

Captain called it 150lbs, it was big enough for me. Biggest fish in my life and it came on fly = Happy Sapro

We trolled on afterward without a fish in sight. 10 minutes till 4, about to call it quits, another fish appears in the spread. My father in law tossed out a fly but the Captain insisted he pull it back into the boat as the mate tossed out a ballyhoo on a pitch rod. It teases up and takes a bite. My son Austin and his father in law traded the rod and eventually brought in this little guy.

300? 350? Black marlin banger.gif ... this is only the 5th black caught this year from the Herradura / Los Suenos area. Austin is still grinning.

No pics from our second day out. We did a half day inshore trying to get a rooster. I had a few shots but the closest I came was having the fly snaked by a jack. I only brought my 12wt and it was honestly overkill for that trip. I would have gotten more shots with the 10wt and all of the roosters I saw were under 20lbs anyway. Total for the day was 6 crevalles and 6 Imperials :S

It was a great time and I will probably go back again, but will try Quepos area which my wife greatly preferred to the Herradura/Jaco craziness.

Very cool Phil!

Went to a bunch of those places 20 years ago on a surf trip.
Glad to see it is still there.

Nice Phil. What was wrong with Herradura?

Quepos is good. Spent several trips in Flamingo. Would go back.

Wife thought Quepos was cleaner, safer and more gringo friendly. I didn't see it but Herradura / Tarcoles was pretty dirty/trashy/questionable. I don't mind the hustlers, plenty of that in Mexico but the continual warnings about theft concerned us a bit.
