How to Tie Lefty’s Y2k Shrimp

Tied/Photos by Rich Hauptvogel

While I am all new to this whole fly tying & fly fishing addiction.  This shrimp fly pattern from Lefty Kreh was actually on a DVD that I had bought. I could not believe how easy it was to tie even for a novice like myself.  Then someone asked me how to tie it so I created this little how to…

Here are the tools and materials needed:

  • Craft Fur or Fly Fur (colors of your choice)
  • Mustad 3407 #4 Hook (or what ever size you want to tie)
  • Bead chain eyes or bar bell eyes
  • Clear mono
  • Hackle pliers or dubbing twister
  • Bodkin
  • Scissors

Start by tying on the bead chain eyes

Next take part of the craft fur and tie on the tail it doesn’t have to look pretty as its going to be covered by more craft fur later

Create a Dubbing loop or Spinning Loop and add craft fur in the loop, then use your hackle pliers or dubbing twister to twist up the mono then wrap forward towards the eye of the hook and tie it off right behind the eye of the hook and whip finish

Use a Bodkin or your scissor point to pull/pick out the craft fur to create the shrimp legs

Trim to your liking

Add some stripes with a permanent marker to the tail and you are ready to fish
